lyrics

I caught a dream along the banks of the frozen river
I lied beneath the dying tree as it began to snow
I stayed asleep it seemed for days that I could not remember
Which way to take back home

He keeps a vigil with the migrants in the crescent moonlight
They share a bottle in the cabin of a vacant train
An easy remedy to free a mind the curse of foresight
And to make a clean escape

She leaves a suitcase by the door in case she’s feeling restless
Pushing pins into a map where she has never gone
A constant longing for a better set of circumstances
And a place where she belongs

It always seems we got a good thing going
Just to see it end
World-weary with a tendency to play pretend
A fickle heart is quick to get some distance
An exit well rehearsed
When stable living is more trouble than it’s really worth

I woke up to the breath of morning as the ice was melting
Found my bearings, tied my boots and headed into the woods
Just up ahead I hung a left, the crooked path was forking
But unsure of if I should

He calls his cousin from a payphone, pleading for some shelter
Stood there freezing, feeling oddly like the prodigal son
She says, “Your conscience is as hollow as an empty cellar,
But I wish you best of luck”

She roams the country with some cash she’d saved
from pawning heirlooms
In pickup trucks, a Greyhound bus, or by extending a thumb
If she gets lonely she’ll find comfort in a stranger’s bedroom
And he’ll mistake it all for love
